Discover Boating Hands-On Skills Training 

Exclusive, ON-THE-WATER Workshops offered only at the show!

Nothing beats hands-on experience when it comes to improving your sailing skills and learning new ones. This year’s show features a selection of on-the-water skills workshops designed to add more fun and excitement to your boat show experience…and take your sailing skills up a notch. Whether you are a newcomer or an experienced sailor, there’s something for everyone—from absolute beginners to seasoned skippers! 

LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS. All sessions are taught by USCG licensed captains who are professional, certified instructors from the American Sailing Association (ASA).

All participants must be able to work as an active crew member while underway; crew members under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.   

 

Two-hour workshops
On-the-water, skills-building workshops offer instruction on specific sailing skills. Choose from:       
  • Docking Under Power   
  • Introduction to Sailing  
  • Coastal Cruising

3 ½ hour workshops
These underway sessions offer a more in-depth experience and additional practice time. Choose from: 
  • Sailing Made Easy               
  • Advanced Sailing Skills 
  • Introduction to Cruising Catamarans
 
Space in these popular workshops is very limited and advance registration is highly recommended. There is an advance registration fee of $99 or $125 on-site for each event. Participants who register in advance will receive FREE boat show admission for the day. NEW for 2014! US Sailing 4-hour Coastal Safety at Sea Course

Date: February 15, 2014
Time: 9am – 1pm

Location: Holiday Inn (across the street from Bayside Marketplace)

In support of coastal races and cruising, US Sailing now offers Coastal Safety at Sea Seminars. The new half-day seminars are for skippers and crewmembers who participate in coastal or nearshore races or passages, and are designed to help them understand the latest safety practices and ensure that they are familiar with the gear necessary to be safe. The curriculum is derived from the one-day and two-day seminars offered by US Sailing and will be moderated by the same instructors.

Core topics include:

  1. Emergency Communications Equipment and Techniques
  2. Personal Safety Gear (life jackets, harnesses, tethers, and personal electronics)
  3. Crew Overboard Prevention and Recovery
  4. Search and Rescue Procedures

Additional topics will be added based on local waters and needs. 

Course fee: $65.00—US Sailing members receive a $10.00 discount.
One (2) day admission ticket to the show included with the price of the seminar.

Not Ready for the Water? Come Sail Away on the Sailing Simulator and take a free sailing lesson.

Get a feel for the water without leaving the show on a virtual sailboat ride. A certified ASA small boat instructor will be on hand to offer you a free sailing lesson and the chance to experience how a boat reacts to the wind and waves right at the show.

Designed and built by a nuclear physicist, the sailing simulator recreates the actual movement of a boat under sail. It’s a unique training platform for sailors of all abilities—whether you’re a new boater who wants to learn how to sail or an experienced sailor who wants to practice under different sailing conditions. Stop by and see for yourself how it really feels to sail without leaving dry land.

Rules? Only one!  Be inside the gates before the Show closes on Saturday, February 15th at 6pm. Cruising Outpost's Cruisers' Party has become one big “must-attend” event.  Pizza, beer and soft drinks are free... Fun to be had by all!

Toward Self-Reliance in Weather Forecasting: 
Lee Chesneau’s Marine Weather One Day Basic Marine Weather Course

When you’re out there, you are on your own, trusting that you are prepared for the elements.  In “Assessing Your Marine Weather Self Reliant Skills” seminar at Strictly Sail Miami, the full day course offering is designed to improve those skills.
 
 Summary of the one-day Introduction to “Basic Marine Weather” is an entry-level one-day course for attendees with little or no marine weather background. The course covers an introduction to 101 weather principles, the language of weather (specifically important definitions), common surface weather systems and their features (e.g., lows, highs, fronts, troughs & ridges), the typical weather symbols commonly found on surface pressure weather charts; what goes into a human intelligence originated forecast, and finally how to document and verify all surface  weather forecasts for confidence building; &  and learning to become self-reliant in your own marine weather forecasting skills. There will also be a very brief introduction on weather communications at sea.
 
This one-day special costs only $99.00 per person (normally $195.00). A Separate interactive note taking guide will be offered separately at $20.00 which covers all the graphics covered in class. .
