Show goers will once again have the opportunity to sharpen up existing sailing skills and learn new ones by participating in one or more hands on learning events created exclusively for the 2012 Boat Show. Participants will learn basic and intermediate skills through hands on exercises conducted by ASA Certified Instructors aboard 30’ to 40’ sailboats. This year’s expanded lineup includes something for everyone... from absolute beginners to seasoned sailors... and they have been specially designed to add more fun and excitement to your Strictly Sail experience.
“Introduction to Sailing” – Are you new to Sailing (or just a little rusty)? Learn how easy and fun sailing is by participating in one of ASA’s basic skills building clinics (ASA 101 – Sailing Made Easy) aboard a Discover Sailing training vessel. During these 90 minute sessions you’ll learn how to raise and lower the sails, trim the sails correctly, tack and jibe, helmsmanship fundamentals, points of sail and more.
Participants will get a chance to put their newfound skills to work at the end of each session by competing against the other boat crews in a friendly (but competitive) “regatta’ to determine who gets bragging rights for the day.
Coastal Cruising – For more experienced sailors, there will be intermediate skills building opportunities in these clinics based on ASA curriculum for Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) and Bareboat Charter (ASA 104). During these 90 minute sessions participants will learn several essential skills including how to heave to, reef the sails, steer with the sails and crew overboard recovery methods.
Docking Under Power & Close Quarters Boat Control – This is an important skill although one that is not often practiced except when departing and returning to the slip. Participants will learn close quarters maneuvering skills taught as part of the ASA Docking “Endorsement” program including: 360 degree turns in tight spaces (back and fill), backing down a narrow channel in a straight line, weather vane turns in windy conditions, coming alongside a pier (fuel dock) and using spring lines in docking maneuvers.
Space is very limited for these events so advance registration is highly recommended. To get more details including content and schedules and to reserve your space in advance, visit the advance registration website by following this link: Click Here
Advanced, Cruising Skills Seminars – The American Sailing Association has brought together some of its most experienced blue water instructors to conduct specially designed seminars geared toward the offshore environment. These 3 ½ hour, underway sessions will cover essential offshore cruising strategies and give participants the opportunity to learn important advanced skills through hands on exercises. All tactics and skills taught during these sessions are taken directly from ASA’s Bareboat Charter (ASA 104) and Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106) programs. Participation is limited to 5 persons per boat. To get details about the content and schedule and to reserve your space in this unique program, Click Here
Participants in this 3 ½ hour under way seminar will experience firsthand the expansive comfort, impressive speed and precise maneuverability of the modern cruising catamaran along with the unique sailing and handling needs of larger “Cats”. This exclusive, hands on learning program is ideal for newcomers and monohull sailors with little to no experience on multihulls.
American Sailing Association instructors will cover Cruising Catamaran fundamentals including techniques for tacking and jibing in light air, correct sail trim, steering a compass course, line handling and winch safety, crew overboard recovery, maneuvering in tight spaces under power and much more. All learning elements are taken directly from the ASA Cruising Catamaran certification course (ASA 114).
Space is very limited and advance registration is required. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and capable of performing as an active crew member while underway. Cost for this exclusive seminar is $125 including 2 days boat show admission. You can find out more details, register online and get your boat show ticket in advance at the following link: http://www.regonline.com/ssmiamicruisingcats
